The Hague, 24 February 2025 – The International Commission on Missing Persons (ICMP) mourns the passing of Bajram Qerkini, a steadfast advocate for the rights of families of the missing from the Kosovo conflict.
Born in 1940 in Obri e Poshtme, Glogovc, Mr. Qerkini dedicated more than two decades of his life to efforts to account for the missing. In 2002, he founded the Family Association “Parents’ Voice” in Mitrovica, and from 2014 to 2018, he served as Head of the Kosovo Coordination Council of Family Associations, representing 22 family associations. In 2018, he furthered his commitment to this cause by establishing and coordinating the “Missing Persons Resource Center.”
Mr. Qerkini not only tirelessly searched for his son, Reshat Qerkini, who disappeared on August 4, 1998, but he was committed to helping all families of the missing, regardless of their ethnic or religious background, find their missing loved ones and to securing their rights to truth and justice.
He passed away on February 24, 2025, in Pristina, after a prolonged illness.
ICMP Director General Kathryne Bomberger said, “Bajram Qerkini’s unwavering determination and leadership brought together families of all ethnic backgrounds in Kosovo and the region, fostering a collective demand for truth and justice. His legacy as a champion for the families of the missing will endure.”
ICMP extends its deepest condolences to his family, colleagues, and all those who shared in his mission.
