A 21st Century Challenge

Major migrations, war, political instability and organized crime all contribute to persons going missing. This section makes available a massive volume of new information on the issue, examining where persons are missing in the world, the circumstances of their disappearance and what, if anything is being done to address the issue in a given context. Countries have not been selected according to a fixed criteria and the nature and scale of the problem varies from country to country. More countries and more information will be added to this section continuously.

The families of missing persons from the countries of the former Yugoslavia today and yesterday organized commemorative events to mark the International Day of the Disappeared, 30 August. The ICMP applauds the efforts of the families of the missing to mark this day, to raise awareness about the issue of missing persons, to demand accountability from the state, and to jointly pay tribute to the missing regardless of nationality, ethnicity or religion.
