[:en]Srebrenica, 11 July 2023: The remains of 30 victims of the Srebrenica Genocide were buried at the Potocari Memorial Cemetery near Srebrenica today.
More than 7,000 victims of the Genocide have been identified as a result of the DNA-led identification process pioneered by the International Commission on Missing Persons (ICMP). Each year, the remains of more victims are buried. The process of identification and reassembly of skeletal remains can involve recovery from multiple clandestine gravesites and may continue for a period of years.
Attending today’s ceremony at Potocari, together with staff from ICMP’s Western Balkans Program, Director-General Kathryne Bomberger said the thousands of white headstones that line the hillside opposite the factory where men and boys were separated from their families in July 1995, testify to the “unremitting necessity of justice.”
Ms Bomberger stressed that “each of the people buried in this cemetery has been named,” and the facts of the Genocide have been established – through evidence that has been sifted in court and through identifications based on a proven and reliable scientific process.
“We stand together with the families of victims,” Ms Bomberger said. “Crimes committed in Srebrenica and elsewhere cannot go unpunished; the rule of law must be upheld. Everything must be done to secure truth, justice and reparations.”
This week, in addition to the burials today, 71 “re-associations” will be carried out. Human remains that have already been identified and buried will be exhumed, and bones that have since been recovered will be restored to the skeleton; the bodies will then be reburied. In each case, the families have been contacted and asked to give their consent to the re-association. Even these bodies, in many cases, will still be incomplete.

Više od 7.000 žrtava genocida identificirano je kao rezultat procesa zasnovanog na upoređivanju DNK koji je pionirski započela Međunarodna komisija za nestale osobe (ICMP). Svake godine se sahranjuju novi posmrtni ostaci žrtava. Proces identifikacije i ponovnog sastavljanja skeletnih ostataka može uključivati ekshumaciju iz više skrivenih grobnica i može trajati godinama.
Prisustvujući današnjoj ceremoniji u Potočarima, zajedno sa uposlenicima ICMP-ovog Programa za zapadni Balkan, generalna direktorica Kathryne Bomberger kazala je da hiljade bijelih nadgrobnih spomenika koji se nižu uz padinu nasuprot fabrike u kojoj su u julu 1995. godine muškarci i dječaci odvajani od svojih porodica, svjedoče o “neprestanoj potrebi za pravdom.”
Bomberger je naglasila da “sve osobe koje su sahranjene u ovom mezarju imaju ime i prezime”, dok su činjenice o genocidu utvrđene – putem dokaza koji su potvrđeni u sudskim postupcima i kroz identifikacije zasnovane na dokazanom i pouzdanom naučnom procesu.
„Mi smo uz porodice žrtava“, rekla je Bomberger. “Zločini počinjeni u Srebrenici i na drugim mjestima ne mogu ostati nekažnjeni; mora se podržati vladavina prava. Mora se sve uraditi da se osigura istina, pravda i odšteta.”
Ove sedmice, osim današnjeg ukopa, biće obavljena 71 “reasocijacija”. Posmrtni ostaci koji su već identificirani i ukopani bit će ekshumirani, a kosti koje su u međuvremenu pronađene će biti vraćene pripadajućim kosturima; tijela će potom biti ponovo sahranjena. U svakom ovom slučaju, porodice su kontaktirane i zamoljene da daju saglasnost za reasocijaciju posmrtnih ostataka. Čak i ova tijela će u mnogim slučajevima biti i dalje biti nekompletna.
O ICMP-u
ICMP je sporazumom utemeljena međunarodna organizacija sa sjedištem u Hagu u Nizozemskoj. Mandat joj je da osigura saradnju vlada i drugih organa vlasti u pronalaženju osoba nestalih uslijed sukoba, povreda ljudskih prava, nesreća, organiziranog kriminala, ilegalnih migracija i drugih razloga te da im pruži pomoć u tim procesima. Jedina je međunarodna organizacija koja radi isključivo na rješavanju pitanja nestalih osoba.
