The Hague, 23 May 2024: The International Commission on Missing Persons (ICMP) commends and welcomes the adoption of the Resolution ‘International Day of Reflection and Commemoration of the Genocide in Srebrenica 1995’ by the United Nations General Assembly. This solemn decision represents a significant milestone in acknowledging and honoring the memory of the victims and survivors of the Srebrenica Genocide.

For almost 30 years, ICMP has been dedicated to addressing the issue of persons missing as a result of armed conflicts, human rights abuses, and other causes, including Srebrenica Genocide. Our efforts have always been, and still are driven by a deep commitment to uphold the rights of surviving families to truth and justice.

The locating and identifying of the victims of Srebrenica Genocide has been a painstaking and scientifically rigorous process. Utilizing advanced forensic techniques, including DNA analysis, anthropological examination, and forensic pathology, ICMP forensic experts have worked tirelessly to help to identify human remains recovered from mass graves in the Srebrenica area. This meticulous approach to identification has not only provided closure for the families of the victims but has also played a crucial role in documenting the atrocities committed during the genocide and holding perpetrators accountable for their crimes.

Up to date, more than 7,000 of the more than 8,000 reported missing in Srebrenica in July 1995 have been accounted for. Despite the challenges posed by the passage of time, together with partners, ICMP remains resolute in its commitment to continuing its work to account for the remaining missing.

The establishment of an International Day of Reflection and Commemoration serves as a poignant reminder of the enduring impact of genocide on individuals, families, and communities. It underscores the imperative of upholding human dignity and fundamental rights, and it reaffirms our collective commitment to preventing such atrocities from ever occurring again.

The ICMP stands in solidarity with the survivors, the families of the victims, and all those affected by the Srebrenica genocide. The adoption of this Resolution stands as a beacon of remembrance and hope for generations to come.
