16 February 2011: The Chargé d’ Affaires of the EU Delegation to BiH, Boris Iarochevitch visited ICMP’s headquarters and the DNA laboratory in Sarajevo as well as the Podrinje Identification Project (PIP) and ICMP’s Identification Coordination Center (ICD) in Tuzla today.
Following the conclusion of his visit Mr. Iarochevitch stated, “I am very impressed with the work that ICMP has accomplished so far. It has provided a level of accuracy in accounting for missing persons that has never before been available to governments confronted with large numbers of missing persons from armed conflict. ICMP’s work has not only contributed to ensuring transparency and accountability in the search for the missing, but also guaranteeing that Bosnia and Herzegovina, through the Missing Persons Institute, searches for missing persons regardless of their origin. I would like to reiterate in this regard, that the process in this country is conducted in a non-discriminatory manner. For these reasons, the European Union is proud to support ICMP’s work,” said Mr. Iarochevitch.
“ICMP is extremely grateful for the continued generous support of the European Union to our work. This year’s contribution of EUR 1.2 million will be used to support ICMP’s technical assistance to Bosnia and Herzegovina. This contribution is an important investment to ensure peace, stability and reconciliation in BiH and the region,” said ICMP Director General Kathryne Bomberger.
The European Union has since 2004 supported the work of ICMP with over EUR 3 million and a further EUR 2 million has been foreseen for ICMP under the EU 2010 Instrument for Pre-accession for BiH.[:bs]
